A Country Song
(This works best if read with the appropriate country twang in
your voice.)
I knew that it was over
That night you pulled a knife
I can no longer live with
Increased domestic strife
I need the kind of loving
You cannot seem to give
So let me go, my darling
Please dear, I want to live.
I guess that I am lucky
You did not have a gun
I don't know why you gave me
That one last chance to run.
I am not sure what I would do
If you were not my wife
But now that I am free of you
I'll know a better life
I cannot seem to figure out
Just why you want me dead
Perhaps those years of happiness
Have gone right to your head
You only say you love me
when I refuse to stay
But if you want to kill me
I'll have to run away
How can you say you love me
And give me this abuse
(I'd try to reconcile with you
But it's just no damn use)
It isn't often love can be
Some kind of masterpiece
So, my darling, set me free
And let me go in peace
Let me go, my darlin
Why can't you see we're through
Let me go, my darlin
It's just not safe to be in love with you.
